Michel Eyquem de Montaigne, friend of Etienne de La Boëtie, author of the Essais et Maire de Bordeaux, is one of the most illustrious characters of the French heritage. It has a very Aquitain name: Eyquem, which can be found in the Château d'Yquem, the most famous of the Sauternes wines, which gained international fame thanks to Thomas Jefferson and Georges Washington.
Eyquem is a purely Nordic name. Ejkhelm literally translates as "Helmeted Horse." This first name appears rarely in French toponymy. Eyquem (33) and Yquem (33, 40). Equemauville (14) seems rather to come from the name Skammel. Other names from Aquitaine seem to be of Nordic origin: Eiz (Aesi), Roger (Rotgeir), Aymeric (Heimrik), Henri (Henrik), Guiraud (Gerröd), Amanieu (Anleif) etc... There are also female names: Almodis (Hjälmdis) or Rixendis (Riksaldis)
