ESTIGARDE

The village of Estigarde (40) has a decidedly Germanic name. For a long time, I thought it could be an evolution of Steingard, the fortress of Stein or Hastein with apheresis. The initial 'a' falls very often. However, there are no traces of earthworks or mound that could indicate that the site was strategic. However, during the 2026 World Cup, a Norwegian player was named Oestigard, literally the enclosure or the eastern farm. It could have been an Estigarde translation. But, it is unlikely: the toponymy of Gascony tells us that these are mainly first names, those of the Scandinavian settlers, which remained in the toponymy. However, there is a name that could do the job: Stigandi. Les Stingats (40), a very enigmatic name, would correspond to Stigandhus, the house of Stigandi. It is all the more likely that we find Estingants (27) in Normandy, another variant of Stigandhus. Estigarde is more likely to be a deformation of Estigande than of Steingard.
